Our Team

Dr Indra Barathan
MBBS, DRCOG, DFFP, MRCGP, IFM (2016)

I have been a GP for over 16 years and have loved being a generalist as well as having the skill to look at the whole patient. As a qualified GP and functional medicine practitioner, I understand both approaches can be necessary for many patients who have complex conditions and taking medication. An in-depth knowledge of acute and serious pathology also means that serious underlying conditions that might require urgent referral are not missed.

Combining conventional medicine with functional medicine, I work in partnership with my patients to address health issues to help them achieve optimum health benefits. This is the future of healthcare and it can help many patients live a healthier life.

I truly believe in a holistic assessment of my patients, a notion at the very heart of functional medicine. It shifts the traditional disease-centred focus of medical practice to a more patient-centred approach and sees patient and practitioner work together in a therapeutic partnership.

I opened my clinic in November 2016 to provide personalised functional medicine consultations, and I now have practices in Leeds and Manchester.

My passion is helping my patients learn how they have got to where they have got to and what they can do to help themselves shift towards vitality. I love supporting patients with complex medical needs, hormonal problems and gut issues. As inflammation is the root of all chronic illness, we are able to support a variety of clinical symptoms.

Shakela Shan
BA(Hons), PgDip Nutritional Science & Practice, mBANT, rCNHC

I am a nutritional therapist and a metabolic balance practitioner. I am passionate about nutrition and lifestyle medicine and I offer my clients a holistic journey to health and wellness. My areas of specialism are weight management, chronic fatigue and digestive health. I have been trained using a functional medicine approach to identify the core nutritional and lifestyle imbalances that need addressing to achieve optimal health.

Working in collaboration with Dr Indra gives me the opportunity to ‚Äėconnect the dots‚Äô further to help clients achieve a better understanding of their chronic illness by identifying nutritional deficiencies.

I enjoy working closely with my clients on a one-to-one basis offering a holistic approach to a variety of clinical symptoms. We are all unique and what works for one may not necessarily work for others, which is why I use the functional medicine approach.

In addition, I help my clients plan, shop and eat in a nutritionally balanced way that is tailored to their individual needs. I do not advocate diets; instead, I aim to empower my clients to make intelligent food choices that eventually become a natural habit of life. This is delivered through personalised nutrition and lifestyle support.

Dr Ailsa Care
MBChB, MRCGP, AFMCP

I qualified from Leeds University in 1989. Following GP training, I have been working as an NHS GP in Huddersfield for over 20 years.

Following some personal health problems, which conventional medicine failed to solve, I sought some medical advice from a practitioner who used a root-cause approach, similar to functional medicine. The resolution of my health issues led me to seek training in this approach. Since then I have completed training with both the Institute of Functional Medicine and the British Society of Ecological Medicine.

When you learn about functional medicine, it makes so much sense to search for the root causes of a patient’s illness. I love having so much more time to spend with patients and to be able to offer a truly holistic, personalised approach.

Dr Meeta Tanna
BM, DRCOG, DFFP, MRCGP, AFMCP

I graduated in Medicine from Southampton University in 1997. I have been a General Practitioner for 14 years and continue to work in the NHS with an interest in all aspects of healthcare.

I became a Functional Medicine Practitioner because I believe that conventional medicine treats long-term health problems by treating symptoms and not the root cause. This way of practising medicine is not enough to help most people get better.

This led me to train further with the Institute of Functional Medicine studying the underlying cause of long-term conditions.

I believe that good health is possible by focusing our attention not just on the body but also the mind. I have practised Yoga and Meditation all of my life. In 2017 I became a Kundalini Yoga Teacher and Mindfulness Coach teaching adults and children.

Fiona Beard
Health Coach

Having originally trained as a nurse, I spent many years in the pharmaceutical industry running a sales and marketing company.

Personal health issues brought me to functional medicine, and I qualified as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach specialising in chronic pain management.

I support my patients with any lifestyle changes necessary to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

Ros Connolly
Health Coach

It was my own health journey that inspired me to train as a Health Coach at the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, qualifying me to work with Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) trained Doctors and Practitioners. I was diagnosed with the Autoimmune Disease – Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2016. Using Functional Medicine, I have improved my health immeasurably and am committed to helping others find their way to health and wellness.

I will support you to find a variety of ways to create new, lasting habits, which make sense for you, as the unique individual you are. I will treat you as a whole person, understanding that many factors influence health. I will encourage you to find a new level of awareness and trust in your body, integrating good choices into your daily life. You may want to address food and nutrition, stress management, movement, sleep issues, resilience, support and more. I will be there to help you navigate any hurdles and barriers you come across which are hindering your progress.

I am passionate about helping clients achieve their optimal health thorough lifestyle change so they can live their lives to their fullest potential.
